It is used as a marker to distinguish astrocytes from other glial cells during development. Mutations in this gene cause Alexander disease, a rare disorder of astrocytes in the central nervous system. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.

Immunohistochemical analysis of paraffin-embedded Human brain tissue. 1, GFAP Rabbit Monoclonal Antibody was diluted at 1:200(4°C,overnight). 2, EDTA pH 9.0 was used for antibody retrieval(>98°C,20min). 3,Secondary antibody was diluted at 1:200(room temperature, 30min).
